Dear Colleagues,
We are proud to announce that an important article on the effect of EMDR therapy on epigenetics received the distinction of the European Journal of Psychotraumatology Best Paper Award 2024.
The winners are:
Carvalho Silva, R., Martini, P., Hofoff, C., Mattevi, S., Bortolomasi, M., Menesello, V., Gennarelli, M., Baune, B.T., & Minelli, A. (2024).
Article:
DNA methylation changes in association with trauma-focused psychotherapy efficacy in treatment-resistant depression patients: a prospective longitudinal study.
The study found evidence that trauma-focused psychotherapy, in particular EMDR, can lead to measurable DNA methylation changes in individuals with treatment-resistant depression.
Please transmit this important information to all EMDR therapists, whether still in training or accredited, and to therapists who are not (yet) trained in EMDR, as this is a major scientific finding. Add this information to your website, and re-publish the EMDR Europe post that will appear very soon on LinkedIn and Facebook.
We communicated last year about this important paper, and this was the reason we invited Prof. Minelli to present at our next conference in Prague.
With this important distinction, we are even more happy and honoured to have Alessandra Minelli, an author of this study, as a keynote speaker at our annual EMDR Europe Conference, May 30–31 & June 1, 2025, in Prague and online.
Alessandra Minelli is Associate Professor in Psychobiology at the Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine at the University of Brescia, Italy. She will present on “Epigenetic and biological signatures of early life traumatic events: a putative effect of EMDR.” In this keynote, Prof. Minelli will present on the interactions between childhood trauma, the increased risk of developing mental and physical disorders in adulthood, and the associated biological dysregulations.
Prof. Minelli will explore biological dysregulations identified following traumatic events, particularly those occurring in childhood, and examine the potential role of trauma-focused psychotherapy, such as EMDR, in addressing these dysregulations. She will also discuss recent research on the epigenetic mechanisms linked to parental trauma and its effects on offspring.
